Carsten Pieper This is the third, and up to now it seems the last, album by this Danish guitarist. As it was released in 2013, I'm wondering if he stopped recording (at least as band leader/composer) which would be a real pity. This is mellow jazz (but never of the schmaltzy kind, mind you!), that makes for very pleasant listening. Just what I need sometimes. Søren aims at "moods and soundscapes... simplicity rather than complexity" and he achieved that to great effects! And nice playing by the whole band... Favorite track: Pipe Dreams.

Andrew Parkinson This is sublime music-making of three highest order. It transports you to another dimension where the pace of life is slower and every moment is precious. Beautiful serene understated guitar solos. Melodic jazz which merits repeated listening and soothes the jaded spirit. Deserves to be spoken of in same breath as Jacob Bro. Fabulous album and favourite of mine, great interplay with piano, brilliant percussion and bass, flawless, more Please! Favorite track: Insomnia.

Simon Toldam (p)

“”A perfect work of art” is a very apt description of Søren Dahl Jeppesen´s sonic universe. On his latest two CD-releases in his own name, the young guitarist has hit on a beautiful and spherical vein, where silent landscapes of sound offer a suitable background for a melodic and Nordic tone. “Red Sky” is an original contribution to Danish jazz.”

Thus was the reasoning when 32-year-old guitarist and composer Søren Dahl Jeppesen received a nomination for two Danish Music Awards 2011 (“Best Jazz Album” and “Best New Jazz Artist”) for his latest release, Red Sky. Furthermore, The Danish Arts Council (Statens Kunstfond) awarded the album for being amongst the eight best releases of rhythmical music that year.

April 20th of 2013 will see the release of the follow-up, Pipe Dreams, on cd/lp/download. Dahl Jeppesen’s close cooperation with Iceland’s Óskar Gudjónsson (sax) is intact, and the customary rhythm section - Klaus Nørgaard (b) and Jakob Høyer (dr) - has been supplemented with piano player Simon Toldam.
“I wanted to add a new dimension to the sound of the group. Simon Toldam, with his expressionistic playing, adds a great musical contrast to me and Gudjónsson’s more melodic playing”, says Dahl Jeppesen.

“It has been hard work for me to have every single composition arranged optimally. I wanted to record every single tune on its own terms. That is why several takes are recorded without drums, while others, for instance, do not feature bass or saxophone. Also, I play an acoustic guitar on several tracks and a couple of takes even feature strings (Bjarke Falgren).”
“I usually categorize my music as “film music”, heavily inspired, though, by jazz. One of my great role models when it comes to composing is Jan Johansson, but I have also been inspired by for instance Johann Sebastian Bach. When others have described my music, the film composer Ennio Morricone’s name also often pops up”, says bandleader Søren Dahl Jeppesen. “My goal is to create moods and soundscapes. I keep my focus on simplicity rather than complexity.”
